Here are a few typical words often seen on vocabulary tests, along with example sentences to help you understand their meaning:


Sample Vocabulary Words with Examples

  • Advocate (v.)
    To argue in favor of something.
    Example: She advocates equal rights for all citizens.

  • Banal (adj.)
    Dull or commonplace.
    Example: The movie’s plot was banal and predictable.

  • Benevolent (adj.)
    Marked by kindness or goodwill.
    Example: The benevolent teacher donated books to the library.

  • Pragmatic (adj.)
    Practical and realistic.
    Example: His decision was pragmatic, not emotional.

  • Precarious (adj.)
    Unstable or dangerous.
    Example: The ladder was in a precarious position.

  • Persistent (adj.)
    Continuing despite difficulties.
    Example: Her persistent efforts led to success.

  • Bias (n.)
    A tendency to prefer one thing over another unfairly.
    Example: The judge showed no bias during the trial.

  • Perpetual (adj.)
    Continuing without end.
    Example: The region is in a state of perpetual conflict.

  • Postulate (v.)
    To assume as true for the sake of argument.
    Example: Scientists postulated the existence of a new planet.

  • Predatory (adj.)
    Seeking to exploit or oppress others.
    Example: The company was accused of predatory business practices.


These words are frequently chosen for vocabulary assessments and will help improve both your comprehension and usage in exams.


  • Rosy : A situation that is hopeful, optimistic and can lead  to happiness or success. = a positive situation.
  • Eg: 1. The financial situation of the company is rosy.
  •        2.Our day was rosy as we went out for a movie.

  • Contemplate : Thinking deeply about something.
  • Eg:  1. We contemplated the situation before giving any answer.

  • Blemish : A mark that that spoils the appearance of something OR spoils the situation.
  • Eg: The changing of the team members was a blemish as the team missed.

  • Exaggerate : Larger than realty.
  • Eg: Do not exaggerate about the party that you attended by adding unnecessary details.
  •        Stop exaggerating about the party. 

  • Euphoria : Extreme happiness.
  • Eg: The team felt a sense of euphoria after winning the match.

  • Enigmatic : Mysterious or impossible to understand.
  • Eg: She has an enigmatic personality

  • Wary: To be cautious or not trustworthy.
  • Eg: I was wary of the situation.
