Kamala Das, popularly known by her one-time pen name Madhavikutty, was an Indian poet in English as well as an author in Malayalam from Kerala, India. (courtesy : Wikipedia)


According to my gathered information   Kamala Das (1934 – 2009) started her career as a poet writing under the name of Madhavi Kutty. The renowned Indian author was bilingual and wrote in her mother tongue, Malayalam, as well as in English. 

Born in Punnayurkulam, India as Kamala Surayya, she was better known in her home state of Kerala for her short stories and her autobiography, and in the rest of the country, for her English poetry.

Her explosive autobiography, My Story, written in Malayalam (her native tongue), gained her both fame and notoriety. Later, it was translated into English.

Koyapalli Kelappan was an Indian politician, independence activist, educationist and journalist. During the Indian independence movement, he was the lead figure of Indian National Congress in Kerala and was popularly known as Kerala Gandhi. Ambika Mahadev Dhurandhar, FRSA (4 January 1912 – 3 January 2009) was an Indian artist who was among the first few women to complete the G. D. Art (Painting) course from Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. She was the daughter of the renowned artist M. V. Dhurandhar, who was a former student, teacher and the first Indian director of Sir J. J. School of Art.

She painted under the guidance of her father, cared for his vast collection of artworks and lived under their stylistic influence throughout her life. As a result, the effect of the golden age of Academic art at the Sir J. J. School of Art stayed with her for lifetime.

Guljarilal Nanda - charcoal pencil sketch



Gulzarilal Nanda was an Indian politician and economist who served as the Interim Prime Minister of India twice, following the deaths of Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and a leader of the Indian National Congress. He was known for his integrity, humility, and commitment to the welfare of the people.

 

He was also a pioneer of labour welfare and social security in India. He worked as a secretary of the Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association for 25 years and advocated for the rights and interests of the workers. He was also a deputy chairman of the Planning Commission and a minister of home affairs and external affairs in various governments,

 

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1997 for his contributions to the nation. He died in 1998 at the age of 99. He was a true Gandhian who preferred a life away from the spotlight and lived by the principles of simplicity and austerity.

 

(Gulzarilal Nanda had a very humble and simple lifestyle. He lived in a rented house in a colony and did not reveal his identity to the landlord or the neighbors. He only received a monthly pension of Rs 500, which he used to pay the rent and buy his necessities. He did not accept )any government facilities or privileges that he was entitled to as a former Prime Minister.


One day, the landlord threw him out of the house for not paying the rent for a few months. He pleaded with the landlord to give him some more time, but the landlord was rude and insensitive. The neighbors also tried to intervene, but they did not know who he was. A journalist who happened to pass by the scene recognized him and took some photos. He wrote a news article about his pathetic condition and revealed his identity to the public.

The next day, the then Prime Minister and other ministers and officials visited him and offered him government accommodation and other facilities. They also apologized to him for his ordeal. However, Gulzarilal Nanda refused their offer and said that he did not need any such facilities at his old age. He also forgave the landlord and asked him not to feel guilty. He said that he was happy with his simple life and did not want any publicity or recognition. He was a true Gandhian who lived by his principles till the end

She was petite, demure in her looks, at the same time, extremely forthright, upfront and dedicated to the cause of women’s liberation. She passed away on 8 April, 2014 at the age of 84. Hers was a life lived for her commitment for progressive and secular values and socialist and humanist ethos.

Swarup Rani Nehru (Thussu, 1868 – 10 January 1938) was an Indian independence activist. She was the wife of barrister and Indian National Congress leader Motilal Nehru and the mother of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.


She played a prominent role in India's freedom movement in the 1920s–30s as an advocate of civil disobedience against the British Raj and its salt laws, and encouraged women to make salt.

Kalpana Dutta - Freedom fighter - charcoal pencil sketch





Here is a brief description of Kalpana Dutta, Indian freedom fighter.

Kalpana Dutta was one of the members of Master Da Surya Sen's revolutionary group (an influential Indian revolutionary), who carried forward the work of Pritilata Waddedar. She was a member of Chattri Sangha (a semi-revolutionary organization for women, Kolkata). She was part of the armoury loot, and the first attempt at torching Pahartoli Club (which led to the death of Pritilata). During the second attempt, made by herself and Master Da, the British were better prepared. Kalpana Dutta escaped at that point in time, but Master Da was finally captured in the year 1933. Later, after three months, even she was arrested and sentenced to life for taking part in the Chittagong Armoury Loot. She was released six years later.

Kalpana Dutta was a learned student of science. She was inspired by the martyrdom of Khudiram Bose. The cause of patriotism made inroads in her life while she was in Chittagong. This was further encouraged while she was pursuing her studies in the Bethune College, Kolkata. She breathed her last in the year 1995.

According to my gathered information Surya Sen was born on 22nd March 1894 and died on 12th January 1934

Durgawati Devi - Indian freedom fighter - charcoal pencil sketch


My charcoal pencil sketch of the forgotten freedom fighter.


Durgawati Devi or Durga Bhabhi, also known as the 'The Agni of India', is remembered to this day as a threat to the British police. She had tremendous influence on revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, Ashafaqullah and Chandra Shekhar Azad. She also wielded a strong influence on the members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). She was a Bengali, married at the age of 11 years to Professor BhagwatiCharan Vohra (a member of HSRA, who had planned to bomb the jail in order to free Bhagat Singh but sadly died while testing the bomb on the banks of Ravi near Lahore).

Durgawati Devi was an active member of the Naujawan Bharat Sabha, and she assisted in the escape of Bhagat Singh from Lahoreafter the Saunders killing (1928).Herself and Bhagat Singh duped as a couple and escaped to Calcutta, with Rajguru as their servant. Durga met several revolutionaries along with Bhagat Singh, and learned bomb-making. She openly opposed the sentence awarded to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. She even sold her ornaments worth Rs. 3,000 in order to rescue Bhagat Singh and his comrades.As a revenge for their hanging,Durga decided to kill Lord Hailey (ex-Governor of Punjab), who was also a staunch enemy of the revolutionaries. Although the Governor escaped, his aides were injured. She was arrested and awarded imprisonment for three years.

Matangini Hazra was an Indian revolutionary who participated in the Indian independence movement until she was shot dead by the British Indian police in front of the Tamluk Police Station on 29 September 1942. She was affectionately known as Gandhi buri, Bengali for old lady Gandhi.
